ATLANTA – Today, ToolBank USA announced that ToolBanks have loaned $5 million worth of tools to nonprofit organizations since August 2010. ToolBank USA is a national nonprofit organization driving the creation of a network of local ToolBanks, each of which lends a massive inventory of power tools, landscaping equipment, ladders, wheelbarrows and much more to increase the impact of nonprofit organizations and their volunteers. The $5 million mark represents $5 million of savings for churches, charities, schools, and neighborhood associations in slightly more than 3 years. ToolBanks are currently lending tools in Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte, and Cincinnati.
In August 2010, ToolBank USA launched a custom enterprise software platform to manage all aspects of tool lending at ToolBanks. The project, codenamed LFNt (or Elephant) was developed by Atlanta-based REM Enterprise Solutions to meet the specific needs of ToolBank operations, including real-time tool inventory, reservations, scheduling, and membership management. “We had an interesting challenge ahead of us,” explains REM Enterprise Solutions CEO Robert Mason. “ToolBank USA needed a scalable solution that borrowed from nearly every off-the-shelf product, but the final application was genuinely unique. We worked hard to capture the culture of ToolBank in this platform, ensuring superior customer service with every transaction.” REM continues to provide in-kind maintenance and management for LFNt, donating nearly $500,000 worth of skilled services to the development of the platform.
REM and ToolBank USA piloted LFNt in partnership with the flagship Atlanta ToolBank for nearly a year before bringing the Charlotte ToolBank online in 2011 and ToolBanks in Baltimore and Cincinnati the following year. ToolBanks in Houston, Portland OR, Phoenix, Richmond VA and Chicago will begin lending tools in 2014, with LFNt making each implementation a turnkey operation. “We found a true business partner in REM,” said ToolBank USA CEO Mark Brodbeck. “They learned our business and developed a system that serves our needs now, and will continue to as we grow our number of ToolBanks.” The system was underwritten by a grant from The UPS Foundation and relies on the donation of hosting services from Datapipe.
